Condition

Figures The two clay figures were in excellent condition. No significant losses, scratches or abrasions were noted on the painted clay surface. The highly textured and tooled surface displayed areas where the artist added different color clay to the composition. Some areas on the painted surface were coated with a glossy coating. The artist applied this coating randomly. Tiny hairline cracks were observed in the clay that was caused by shrinkage of the material. No cracks were noted that structurally compromised the clay figures. The bronze wings were detachable. White crusty investment products, a by-product of bronze casting were found on the surface of both wings. Scratches were found on the circular bronze platforms that supported the figures. Bases The two columns that held the figures differed in appearance. The column that belonged to the woman displayed a 24" long vertical scuffmark that appeared like brown crayon mark. Close to the brown mark were smaller blue crayon marks. Corrosion products in the form of drips and a large spill mark were detected on the top of the steel plate below the column. The male's column displayed fewer scuffs, which were limited to a few small brown marks, and one 2" long horizontal black scuff. The top of the steel circular plate that supported the column was in good condition with the exception of several minor scratches in the bronze.
