Condition

In good condition, with 32 chess pieces. There is minor wear to the board and there are a number of small scrapes and a few stains visible on some of the pieces, consistent with use and normal wear. One of the light colored pawns has a small patch of discoloration and a small loss to the surface but this looks to be an older repair. there are a few small light colored fills in the wood which also look old and likely original.

Catalogue Note

Executed in 1946, the present work is from a small series of limited edition chess sets that Man Ray made in wood and aluminium in the mid-1940s in Hollywood. The game of chess fascinated the Surrrealists and many artists designed their own chess sets. Man Ray was an avid but mediocre player; however, like so many enthusiasts, he remained devoted to the game throughout his career.
