Condition

Executed on buff-coloured wove paper, laid down on paper, floating in the mount. There is a tiny nick to the top right corner and some very light time staining to all four extreme edges, probably due to previous mounting. There are two nailhead-sized areas of paper skinning to the upper right quadrant and towards the centre of the lower edge. Apart from some light studio dirt to the sheet, this work is in good condition. Colours: Overall accurate. The paper tone is slightly warmer in the original.

Catalogue Note

In 1912, Jacob Epstein spent six months in Paris working on the tomb of Oscar Wilde. During his stay in Paris, Epstein met and formed a close relationship with Modigliani, each sharing the same model. The drawing of this model, Gabrielle Soene, was drawn between 1912 and 1915, when Epstein acquired it.
