Description
- the silver and enamel oklad apparently unmarked, but almost certainly by Ovchinnikov, Moscow, circa 1900, the painted icon panel later (20th century), with added gilded silver frame dated 1871
- Tempera on wood panel, gilded silver, enamel, seed pearls, velvet backing
- 4 3/4 x 4 1/4 in.
- 12 x 10.8 cm
with gilded oklad decorated in brightly colored cloisonné enamels in floral and geometric patterns, the Holy figures' robes finely chased in gilded silver, and the halo with seed pearls, the outer edges raised to resemble half-columns surmounted by deep blue crosses, the corners with Latin crosses in red transparent enamel
Condition
Apparently, the original icon and oklad became separated. The original icon was no doubt painted on zinc and, when lost, a new wood panel was produced to fit the oklad. and a silver frame from a different icon was used to complete the assemblage. the surface of the icon with losses from the back of the oklad, the oklad in overall good condition
