The panel is flat, and comprised of three pieces of wood brought together by two joins, reinforced by single, horizontal strips of wood. There is a horizontal strip of batons, running across the top end of the panel, approximately four inches from the top edge. Some slightly discolored retouches are visible to the naked eye in the flesh tones of the young children, as well as in the forehead of the bearded man at far right. Under UV, it is clear that most of these retouches are present along, or near the panel joins. A few other scattered retouches visible in the composition, for instance along the left edge of the panel. There appears to be an older varnish applied to the surface, and some of the retouches visible are beneath this varnish, while others lay on top. To the naked eye, the painting does present a strong image, and it would appear that the painting could potentially benefit quite well when some of these discolored retouches are addressed.
