Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting on panel has probably been thinned and re-mounted and cradled. This method of support seems to be very successful in this case. In examining the paint layer some very fine vertical cracking is visible in the face and hands of the young woman, but in a raking light a different form of cracking is visible in the varnish. If the picture were to be cleaned, this varnish cracking would most likely be removed along with the varnish, providing a much clearer and smoother finish. Ordinarily cleaning this picture would not necessarily be recommended since it is not particularly dirty, yet in this case it will remove this secondary layer of cracks which will be to the picture's advantage. There are very few losses or restorations to the paint layer. It is always possible that there are a couple of spots of retouch beneath the varnish. However, they are not identifiable either under ultraviolet light or to the naked eye. This painting is in beautiful state.
