The present lot is a cast of Roccatagliata's figure of Saint George for the entrance to the balustrade across the choir of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice. The commission for this statue and its companion, Saint Stephen, is dated January 31, 1593 and documents the first time Roccatagliata is in Venice. The church became the center of his artistic activity in the 1590s.
