Catalogue Note

This early panel by Jack Bush demonstrates a pivotal shift in the artist's output. Though it is essentially representational, it foreshadows his Flag and Thrust paintings through colour, line, and the arrangement of painted forms.

The title refers to a semaphore, which is an apparatus for signaling by flags, lights or mechanical arms at railway crossings. When signaling with flags there are two, one in each hand and the letters of the alphabet are represented by various positions of the arms.
