Catalogue Note

MacDonald went on his second trip to Algoma in September, 1919, in the company of Harris, Johnston, and A.Y. Jackson. Once again, he was instantly enthusiastic about the landscape which perfectly suited his pantheist and romantic nature. The brilliant autumn colours and the spectacular terrain gave him ample inspiration and material for rich, saturated sketches, such as this one.

In this sketch of Layton's Lake, MacDonald has used the striped pink clouds in the clear sky in counterpoint to the reflections on the lake's surface. The prominent hill is a riot of crimson and at the same time a looming presence.
