Catalogue Note
The four oils on paper paintings framed as one, came about after the first of two trips Shadbolt made to the Mediterranean in 1956. In the beginning, his work was very formal and structured, but soon grew more spontaneous. A major change was his adaptation of the free, gestural painting that was common with the Abstract Expressionists in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Shadbolt began to paint without an underlying drawing structure and with oils, allowing him to realize compositions full of radiant colour. A note by Scott Watson from The University of British Columbia, affixed to the reverse of the work, reads;
These delightful works on telephone book paper, came about after Shadbolt's first trip to the Mediterranean in 1956. the actual pieces themselves were his first experiment into new, sharp, bright colour into his palette.
