The blue-eyed subject is seen full length seated on a patterned and fringed stool set upon red and green ingrain carpet against a dark red-brown background. Holding strawberries in both hands, she wears bright red shoes, a white dress trimmed with ribbons, and a double strand of coral beads.

Catalogue Note

At the sitter's death in 1884, the painting was passed on as part of the household furnishings of the Bockee-Deuel farm in Bethe, New York to her sole surviving brother, Silas I. Deuel. Upon his death in 1908, it passed to his brother Pheonix N. Deuel's widow, Amelia C. Deuel. The painting passed to her daughter, Kathryn Deuel Duryea and Penelope Deuel Schryver. In 1966, the painting passed to her nephews, who owned it until 1882.
