Description

  • J. Brown
  • Portraits of Anna Hopkins Turner and Caleb Humiston Turner
  • oil on canvas
  • 27 1/2 in. by 23 1/2 in.
both portraits in what appear to be the original frames. Hers inscribed in pencil "Anna Turner."

Provenance

Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Inc., New York, Important Americana, Sale N04076, Lot 688.

Condition

both have a wax relining, each of the frames appear to be period, and possibly original, and are inscribed in pencil: Caleb Turner, 1752 (his portrait); Anna Turner, 1730 years.(hers). Neither of the pencil inscriptions appears to be period. There are a few small repairs on her portrait – in the crook of the left arm holding the umbrella, and a couple of short (3 inch) vertical repairs to the right of the umbrella. Otherwise, she is in very good condition. The varnish is quite dirty and there a crazing of the varnish, but the crazing does not appear to be in the painted surface, rather just the surface of the varnish. He has a few minor scrapes in the chin and near his left ear which have been touched up, and perhaps a small area near the lapel of his coat. Otherwise, he seems in very good condition. Again, there is dirty varnish, which was probably put on top of a dirty paint surface, which has produced crazing in the varnish and an uneven surface. I would think that a light cleaning would resolve most of these surface issues and the paintings' appearance will really benefit.
