Catalogue Note

An identicial Crowell vane is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Bertram K. Little, and is illustrated as figure #63 in Nina Fletcher Little's Country Arts in Early American Homes (This weathervane was sold at Sotheby's in the Bertram K. and Nina Fletcher Little sale, sale number 6526, lot 145, January 29, 1994). Referring to A. Elmer Crowell, the author states "One twentieth century carver merits recognition here because the few weathervanes he made are outstanding for their form and decoration, and they carry on an earlier tradition of wooden vanes," and "A Canada goose with wingslowered in flight, is another of his remarkable models (63), a counterpart of which was acquired directly from Mr. Crowell about fifty years ago."

As purchased at Richard A. Bourne Co., Inc. Sale of Fine Americana, 26 November, 1983, lot 130.
