Description

  • John James Audubon (after)
  • Great White Heron (Plate CCLXXXI)
  • etching
  • 630 by 970 mm 23 7/8 by 38 1/4 in
Handcolored etching with engraving and aquatint, by R. Havell, 1835, on wove paper, presumably with the J. Whatman watermark, the upper sheet edge trimmed just into the image at right, laid-down to card, framed

Condition

The sheet has been trimmed at all sheet edges, most noticeably at top where it is cut on a diagonal, extending into the image at upper right. (Dimensions at left are 630 mm and at right are 620 mm.) The entire sheet is laid down to card. There is a short diagonal tear in the lower sheet edge at left. The watercolor above the tear is mottled in a diagonal line, suggesting a crease or tear but the paper fibers are not separated.
