Luc Tuymans is one of the most influential contemporary painters today. He continued to paint during a time when many believed the medium had lost its relevance. Nevertheless, in the eighties he decided to dedicate himself to film-making for two years. His passion for painting brought him back to the brush, introducing new techniques taken from photography, television and cinema. His 'immaterial images' are conditioned by his experiences in other media. This influence finds expression in the use of film sequences, and the way in which he fades colours to give the impression of old photographs. Tuymans' themes vary from the old traditions of Flemish and Spanish masters with ideas and inspirations derived from recent stories, for example: American hope deluded by a magnificent dream, the horror of Nazism, the Belgian post-colonial period and the tensions generated by Flemish nationalism. His paintings often stem from photographs of historical events and the news.

After being an advisor Luc Tuymans is now guest advisor at the Rijksakademie.
