Catalogue Note

The design of this chair strongly relates to elements of various designs for chairs by William and John Linnell which suggests a strong link with their work . It combines Neo-Classical details drawn from French designers such as the architect J.C. Delafosse, whose drawings in gout-Grec were a major influence, with the lightness of touch associated with the work of Robert Adam of this period.

Helena Hayward and P. Kirkham in William and John Linnell Eighteenth Century Furniture Makers, London, 1980, 2 Vols., illustrate vol. II, pp. 41-43  and 45 drawings of chairs which show the distinctive carved swags of husks seen at the top of the leg, the fluting on the rails and also the entre-lac decoration on the arms on the present example.
