Catalogue Note
There are three drawings in the Sèvres archives which refer to vases of this form, produced at the Sèvres manufactory in oval and circular form from the mid 1780s. The first dated April 20, 1784, which bears the inscription vase cassolette pour etre monté par M. Tomier, provided the basis for the attribution of the mounts to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843). The inspiration behind the design, and indeed the principal client, for this model appears to have been the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre, the vases being variously referred to as "vase Daguerre rond" and "vase de Monsieur Daguerre oval." Purchasers of this popular model include Madame du Barry and Madame Adélaide in 1787. A pair supplied in 1799 for the state bedroom of Maria Feodorovna at Mihailovsky Castle, St. Petersburg, was sold Christie's New York, October 31, 1996, lot 437. Other examples are in the Wallace Collection, London (R. Savill, The Wallace Collection of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. I, p. 478) and in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (G. Wilson, Summary Catalogue of European Decorative Arts, Los Angeles, 2001, p. 127, no. 253).
