Catalogue Note

The story of Gombaut and Macée was a popular series in early tapestry, and showed idyllic arcadian scenes of country romance.  The protagonists are shown here promising to marry.  A tapestry of the same design woven at Enghien from the Vigo-Sternberg collection was sold at Sotheby's London, February 29, 1996, and a fragment of a variation showing only the shepherdess was sold at Sotheby's London, April 28, 1978, lot 3, and another at Christie's New York, October 7, 2008.
