naturalistically modelled and shaded in yellow and green, the knop formed as a looped stalk issuing green leaves and yellow blossoms and buds, the cover with a red anchor mark.

Condition

Both open flowers have small restored chips affecting two petals; the tip of the leaf to their left is restored; and the tip of the leaf beneath the two buds is restored. There is a minor flat 5mm chip, related to a small firing fault, to the edge of the cover at the stem end. Otherwise in generally good condition.

Melon tureens are mentioned in the 1755 Chelsea sale Catalogue, First Day's Sale, Monday, March 10, lot 38: "Two fine cabbage leaves and two fine large melons for desart"; see the facsimile reproduction of this catalogue in the Appendix of Chelsea Porcelain at Williamsburg by John C. Austin. A similar melon tureen and cover from the Collections of Hanns and Elisabeth Weinberg and The Antique Company of New York was sold in these rooms, Novemeber 11, 2006, lot 657; and a similar pair was sold at Sotheby's in London, July 15, 2004, lot 133
