Catalogue Note
Impressive for the smooth rounded forms of the narcissus and rockwork, the present piece reflects the great admiration for rock forms among scholars of the period. Compare two closely related examples, in the Tingsong Shuwu collection, included in the exhibition Chinese Jade Carving, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 266; and the other exhibited in Chinese Jades from Han to Ch'ing, Asia House Gallery, New York, 1980, cat. no. 113, along with a brushrest depicting a phoenix amongst rockwork, from the Guanfu collection, cat. no. 112.
