A DATED EIGHT-PANEL COROMANDEL LACQUER SCREEN QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD

Description

  • Lacquer
decorated with a pavilion and an audience scene with a dignitary surrounded with officials and ladies, with ladies, children and deer in a walled garden with pine trees, with a border of crane and flower scrolls, the reverse with two deer amongst rockwork, prunus and pine, with a poetical inscription and date corresponding to 1772

Condition

This screen is in reasonable condition, but does have horizontal and vertical cracks to the front and back of each panel. There is also some chips to the lacquer to the sides, corners and feet on a number of the panels. There is restoration to the more significant cracks in the second panel from the right and to the fourth and third panel from the left. There is also areas of thinning to the brown lacquer in some of the undercoated areas to the front. There is two areas of damage to the lacquer in the mid to upper section of the third panel to the right and in one place to the verandah to the mid to upper section of the fourth panel from the right. There is also some thinning and restoration to the ochre coloured lacquer behind the throne to the third and fourth panels from the left .
