Condition

An unusual and fine quality piece in good original condition. The colour of the catalogue illustration is good. Online is an additional image showing the interior back lit. Two elements of glass cracked to right hand door (facing), both to the rippled amber panels. Some minor separation to the leaded seams. Ironwork with typical marks and blemishes, the attractive lower integral handles not apparent from the illustration. Interior with four adjustable shelves. Side cupboards each with two shelves, some marked. Minor old marks and scratches consistent with age. Minor stains, veneer loss and watermarks to the upper flanking open shelves, consistent with use as plant stands. With two original keys. Minor traces of old woodworm. Overall an impressive work in honest condition, ready for display.

Two 'Aux Algues' side cabinets of differing proportions were produced, each incorporating the seaweed motif into the ironwork and glass panels as well as the carving. The model of the present lot was exhibited at the Salon de la Societé des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris in 1906 (Duncan, op. cit., p. 50).

Another 'Aux Algues' cabinet was sold Christie's New York, 11th June 1998, lot 46.
