Description

  • An Apulian Red-figured Column Krater
  • terracotta
  • Height 20 in. 50.8 cm.
painted in front with a woman pouring wine from an oinochoe into a phiale held forth by a youth wearing an Oscan costume and holding a shield, and with a woman wearing a polos and offering a nestoris to a youth holding a lance and wearing a pilos, his shield emblazoned with a leaping dog, the reverse decorated with three draped youths, one holding a staff, another holding a wreath(?).

Condition

Much distressed in both ancient and modern times, repaired from large and small fragments with areas of restoration along the breaks, some effecting the figural scenes; facial features worn. Old repairs and areas of inpainting along the breaklines have begun to fray, vase is covered overall with layer of old grime especially over the top of the rim (which is chipped in several places) and handle plates, each figure at the left end side of each scene has significant repaint probably concealing areas of restoration underneath, interior of vase is covered in hard white powdery substance.
