Catalogue Note
The brilliance of Sencer Vardarman is in his unique approach to his subject matter. In this series Vardarman creates something and somewhere entirely new out of various documented realities. Film stills of an African savannah, a rock concert and a crowd of protestors are transformed into an alternative reality. Something and somewhere we recognise, and yet which is strangely alien.
There is an otherworldly quality to Night Watch and a haunting beauty that remains in the mind's eye long after the photograph has been left behind. In marrying fractured elements of our world, Vardarman creates a smoke-and-mirrors of reality, a romantic new-baroque mise-en-scene of life and place that is simultaneously powerful and poetic.
