Condition
This work is in very good condition overall. There is a 1/4 in. tear from the time of execution located 7 1/4 in. down from the top edge and 9 1/2 in. from the left edge. The Howell paper has been heavily worked by the artist and includes a high degree of surface effect at the time of execution. There are multiple layers of pigment application that are most evident in the center third of the sheet, and the heavy saturation has resulted in undulations some as deep as 1/4 inch. The surface of the paper shows wear from execution and disruption to the surface that is most evident 8 3/8 - 8 7/8 in. from the top edge and 6 7/8 - 7 1/4 in. from the left edge. There are three tiny shards of matter adhered to the surface that are possibly paint or debris from the artist's studio. They are located:
--1 3/4 from the left edge and 3 3/4- 4 1/4 from the bottom edge
--9 1/2 - 9 3/4 in. from the left edge and 6 - 6 1/4 in. up from the bottom edge
--6 in. down from the top edge and 6 1/2 - 6 5/8 in. from the right edge.
There are scattered brush hairs throughout. Where red pigment is pooled, the surface exhibits drying cracks but appears stable. Under Ultra-violet light there are no apparent restorations. The work is hinged to ragboard with rice paper at intervals and is framed in a blonde wood strip frame behind Plexi-glas.
