Good overall condition.
Restoration along the edges probably due to the frame.
Small minor retouching scattered in the background.
The background is slightly darker than reproduction shows.

Notre tableau est très probablement une étude pour le personnage de gauche de La retraite dans le jardin des Tuileries, conservé en 1985 dans une collection privée à Besançon (James Tissot, Londres, Barbican Art Gallery, 15 novembre 1984 - 20 janvier 1985, Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery, 1 février - 16 mars 1985, Paris, musée du Petit Palais 5 avril - 30 juin 1985 rep. page 22, n°19)
Plusieurs esquisses sur carton ou sur bois avec une préparation brune identique à celle de notre oeuvre sont répertoriées.
Les études de Tissot sont rarement signées. Toutefois nous connaissons une petite étude monogrammée par l'artiste offerte à l'un de ses amis. Il est probable que notre tableau ait été lui aussi un présent de Tissot .
