Catalogue Note

The view is of Canton before the fire of 1822, with the absence of Chung Qua's pagoda. The facade of the building between the British and the Dutch factory dates this painting after 1810. For similar views of Canton dated 1810 - 1822, see Crossman, 1991, p. 426 and 427, nos. 7, 8, and 9.

The nine-stage pagoda is shown in the center of the second painting, as well as the smaller pagoda to its right, which no longer survives. A similar painting dated 1810 is illustrated in Crossman, p. 413, no. 10.
