Description

  • Porcelain
incised on the exterior with a double row of overlapping petals and painted with two large panels of emblems of love, the interior with three groups of fruiting vines outlined in underglaze-blue, about a famille-rose vine in the center.

Condition

There is a 3/4 inch shallow circular chip to the exterior footrim and several areas of fritting to the glaze on the upper rim edge. Some wear and flaking to the enamels on the interior base.

Catalogue Note

The "Altar of Love' pattern, also referred to as the 'Valentine' pattern is thought to derive from a drawing by Peircy Brett exectuted during his stay in Canton in 1743. The pattern also appears on Worcester porcelain in the 1760s.
