Description

the exterior painted with a continuous scene of four stages of a hunt, the interior with a lone galloping huntsman.
Literature
Gordon, 1977, p. 77, pl. 62
Condition
There is a section on one side, 8 inches long and running down to just above the foot, that has been broken out to two large pieces and restored back in. It is visible on the exterior, see the catalogue illustration, but oversprayed on the interior. It is impossible to be certain, but it does not appear to have any significant areas of loss. Otherwise this lot is in good condition.

Catalogue Note
According to Howard and Ayers, 1978, p. 281, pl. 280, the hunting scene on the present lot is derived from four engravings after James Seymour, which were in turn based on three engravings ('Going out in the Morning'; 'Brushing into Cover'; 'In Full Chase') by Pierre Charles Canot (1710 - 1777) and one ('The Death') by Anthony Walker (1726 - 1765).
An identical punch bowl and a set of prints after James Seymour's engravings from the Mottahedeh Collection were sold at Sotheby's New York, October 19, 2000, lots 224 and 225.
