Catalogue Note

The design of this plate derives from an engraving by Frans Brun which was published in a Dutch Lutheran bible. Howard and Ayers, 1978, Vol. I, p. 254, speculate that these services were commisioned for the bicentenary of Luther's death. For an identical plate from the Driessmann Collection, see Christie's, London, April 10, 2002, lot. 436.
