Description
- 724cm. total length; 23ft. 7in.
the two sections of cavetto carved with acanthus and flora of the British Isles, including acorns, shamrocks and cornflowers, with traces of simulated oak decoration (2)
Condition
In fair overall condition but with the losses and wear that one would expect from carving of this age. There has been a build up of dirt, there is some fragmentation and chips to the edges and further losses to the carved decoration. The larger length has a horizontal split running through half it's length. The shorter length is made up of two sections, joined on the reverse. First hand inspection is recommended.

Catalogue Note
Cornicing of a very similar design attributed to Samuel Watson is to be found in the Private Apartments at Chatsworth. Some of Watson's invoices have survived including that of 20th November 1706 'Carving don (sic) in the Cornish (sic) to the Lower Dining Room in the West Front. £8. 16s. 7d.' (Watsons Book called, Designs, Bills and Agreements'- Devonshire Papers). There is also a drawing from the same source of cornicing not far removed from the example offered here, illustrated
