Catalogue Note
The traveller and writer Celia Fiennes (1662-1741) visited Chatsworth at the turn of the 17th century and recorded her impressions in her notebooks (later published as Journeys Through England). She noted '...every roome is differing work and all the fine carving and over the doors some of it is of the natural colour and varnish'd and others painted.'
