Catalogue Note
This pair of elaborate frames are likely to have been made for part of the 1st Duke's decoration of the Long Gallery. The watercolour of the room by William Henry Hunt from 1822 (illustrated on page 54), would appear to show them on either side of the fireplace. They were removed from the room as part of Sir Jeffry Wyatville's remodelling of the 1820s.
Samuel Watson invoiced for his work in the gallery including 'for carving for spandrels of two frames in the gallery and cleaning the marble, p....s and setting them up and then £ 2.10.s.' Watson's book called Designs, Bills and Agreements (Devonshire Archive).
