Catalogue Note

First edition. Clarke was secretary of the Hampden Mining Company, and this is an account of his trip to Los Angeles by way of Mexico in 1849. His work is the first description of this unusual route from Camargo, Mexico through Chihuaha and Sonora to Arizona and California. Clarke spent the winter of 1850-1851 at Sacramento, Marysville, and along the Yuha River.
