Quoique signé du seul A. Constantin, peintre sur émail et sur porcelaine, genevois, il est maintenant prouvé que Stendhal fut le principal artisan de cet ouvrage. La plus grande partie de l'ouvrage traite de peintures qui se trouvent à Rome ; plusieurs études sur Raphaël, la chapelle Sixtine, Fra Angelico, le Pérugin, Titien, Léonard de Vinci...
