Description

  • Jan de Bray
  • portrait of a young man, head and shoulders in a brown coat with a white collar and a red sash
  • oil on panel
Oil on panel, in a fine contemporary tortoise shell frame

Provenance

Sir Charles Clore,
His sale, where designated as the 'Property of the late Sir Charles Clore's Charitable, Personal Settlement', London, Sotheby's, 11 December 1985, lot 138, where acquired by the present owners.

Condition

The support consists of a flat panel which is cradled to the reverse. The paint surface appears rather flattened and under a discoloured varnish. Scattered discoloured retouchings can be made out upper left, centre right and along some very small losses to the left cheek. Inspection under UV lgiht confirms these retouchings and points to some further scattered strengthenings to add definition, for example in the hair and red sash. Would benefit from removal of the present dull varnish.
