By family descent until sold London, Phillips, 11 December 1984, lot 118,  (bt. for £8,000).

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is no visible loss of paint and there are no apparent damages. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered minor retouchings, predominantly to the sky in the upper section of the canvas, and some very minor infilling to craquelure down the left hand side of the painting. There is a discoloured old, dirty and opaque varnish overall. FRAME Held in a wooden frame, with a gold painted inner edge. Catalogue Note

The horse in this picture was owned by William Craven (1668-1711), nephew and heir of Sir William Craven. He married Elizabeth, sister of Sir Fulwar Skipwith Bt. of Newbold Hall.

Robert Byng and his brother Edward were pupils of Sir Godfrey Kneller and worked as assistants in Kneller's studio. Byng also painted a portrait of William Craven's two sons, William and Fulwar, in 1702.
