Condition

STRUCTURE Both panels consist of a single piece of wood, in good condition. Both panels are still providing a solid support for the paintings. PAINT SURFACE Both paintings appear to be in good condition. There are some minor abrasion marks to the outer edges of both panels, where they meet the frame, and there is a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish overall in both pictures. There are one or two very minor retouchings to craquelure, visible with the naked eye, scattered in both panels. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish, as well as the general condition mentioned above. There do not appear to be any further signs of recent retouching, other than to one very small area in the extreme lower right of the panel representing the personification of England. FRAME Both held in matching gilded wooden frames. Catalogue Note

These two panels were probably painted shortly after 1720, when Thornhill was working as 'Serjeant Painter to the King'. The allegorical figures, representations of the kingdoms of England and Scotland, are an extension of the royal coat of arms, denoting the virtues of King George's rule.
