The colours are extremely fresh and clear, probably as a result of the miniature being kept at all times in the original case. Catalogue Note

This portrait was commissioned to commemorate the marriage of the sitter, younger daughter of Henry Pelham of Crowhurst, Sussex, to Thomas Papillon of Lees, Kent (d. 1838). The couple were married on the 2nd June at St. George's Church, Hannover Square, London. The portrait miniatures of Thomas Papillon (1578-1637) and his wife are also offered in this sale as are snuff boxes which follow in this sale.
