Description
- Nicholas Hilliard
- Portrait of a Nobleman
- watercolour with bodycolour and gold on vellum, held in an associated gold frame with scroll surmount
- 3.4 by 2.8 cm.; 1 1/4 by 1 1/8 in.
with receding curling hair, small moustache and pointed beard, wearing a gold edged gorget over a white doublet, a lace-trimmed collar and a gold-embroidered blue sash, with an earring, woodland and sky background, gold border
Condition
The miniature has been well preserved. The black pigment used on the gorget has crazed slightly. The skin tones have faded slightly and there is minor paint loss in the sky area to left and right of the head. The detailing of the gold and lace is delightfully crisp.
