Catalogue Note

Eugenia Errázuriz, born in Chile on September 15, 1860, was the daughter of a silver magnate and the wife of José Tomás Errázuriz, a wealthy Chilean landscape painter.  Eugenia was renowned for her beauty and style and was a great patron of the avant-garde and an avid supporter of the arts including literature, music and ballet throughout her lifetime. In addition to becoming a prominent collector and a close friend of Pablo Picasso, Eugenia also helped paved the way for the fashion of Coco Chanel. Upon moving to Paris in 1882, Eugenia and her husband developed a relationship with John Singer Sargent who would go on to paint Madame Errázuriz on a number of occasions. This portrait was completed later in Eugenia's life, after over 25 years of friendship with Sargent.
