Catalogue Note
MacMonnies modeled 'Bacchante and Faun' while in Paris in 1893-4. He presented the original, larger version to architect Charles McKim as a gift in return for a loan of 50 dollars which had enabled the sculptor to make the trip to Paris. McKim had wanted to place the sculpture in the courtyard of his newly completed Boston Public Library building. But after conservative Bostonians created a huge stir about the statue's "drunken indecency" and "wanton nudity", McKim withdrew the gift and instead offered it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where it was received by the Board of Trustees enthusiastically. Because of its popularity, the artist created several smaller versions of the subject.
