Catalogue Note

Chokwe ivory sculpture is exceedingly rare. For another closely related tobacco mortar in ivory surmounted by the cihongo mask, symbol of wealth and power, see the catalog of the exhibition Réceptacles at the Musée Dapper in Paris and the discussion by Marie-Louise Bastin in Falgayrettes-Leveau (1997: 128). For a second example see Bastin (1982: 218, cat. 137).
