Catalogue Note

The realist oil painter Chen Yiming was born in Shanghai in 1951.  In the 1980s he cooperated with both the Wallay Findlay Galleries and the Hammer Galleries in New York and was highly thought of by collectors at the time.  His work is inspired by his own life and by traditional Chinese elements.  The painting Gazing for example, depicts a young girl sitting in front of a table, holding a fan and staring into the distance.  The setting of this work and the clothes and make-up of the girl convey strongly Eastern elements. The artist's fusion of Western classical painting techniques alongside Eastern elements lends this work its distinct quality.
