Condition

The canvas has been relined, presumably as result of a small repaired hole which appears just above the figure's head. Under ultraviolet light, there appear to be five other areas of retouching, which appear to have been done in response to some slight flaking. These are along the centre of the upper edge, the centre of the left hand edge, and slightly above and below the centre of the right hand edge, and in the bottom right hand corner. However, the impasto remains generally crisp and apart from some surface dirt and slightly discoloured varnish, there appear to be no further problems. Held in the original frame with a canvas slip, although it appears to be repainted silver at a later date. Please telephone the department on 020 7293 5381 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
