Catalogue Note
The bust was commissioned by the War Artists' Advisory Committee and executed in November 1946. In his Autobiography Epstein wrote that: 'the opportunity came after the war when [Churchill] was living opposite me. After three somewhat restless sittings Churchill decided to stay at Chartwell where he gave me three further sittings.'
