Catalogue Note

Eugène Marioton was a pupil of Augustin Alexandre Dumont. He had a long and successful career as a sculptor and medal engraver, and it is interesting to note that he has applied a late Empire Légion d'Honneur medal to the bust of Napoleon, who founded the order in 1802.  It remains the highest order of chivalry in France and is divided into a number of degrees such as Chevalier, Offiicier, Commandeur, Grand Officier and Grand'Croix.  Napoleon wore this medal at all times, embodying his vision of the French Empire.
