Condition

Original canvas. There are no signs of retouching visible under ultraviolet light through an even varnish. Apart from light stretcher marks to the edges of the canvas and scattered craquelure, this work is in good condition, with rich colours and areas of stong impasto. Held in a gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1898, the present work is from Sorolla's early period and exquisitely reveals the painter's fastidious attention to the depiction of light and air. The use of supple and loose brushstrokes enhances the fragility of the flowers and reveals the artist's impulsive and creative mastery, notably reflected in Sorolla's characteristic use of smudges, blots and crossing out. The flowers are located in the centre of the composition to emphasise their presence and to accentuate their brightness in contrast to the dark background.
