Wilhelm Freund, Vienna (inherited from the above in 1934; Wilhelm 'Willy' Freund, born in Pilsen, Bohemia on 2 May 1915, was the only son of the Viennese banker, Dr Richard Freund (1878-1934) and his wife, Gina Rubel (1892-1935). Wilhelm Freund studied Law and had enrolled at Oxford University in 1937 before the German Anschluss of Austria in 1938. After his father died, Willy Freund inherited parts of his nineteenth-century and German Impressionist art collection, including the present work.)
Seized and banned from export by the Zentralstelle für Denkmalschutz in 1938
Acquired by the Österreichische Galerie (Neue Galerie in der Stallburg and latterly the Belvedere) in 1939 (inv. no. 3683)
Restituted by the above to the heirs of Wilhelm Freund in 2009

Condition
Apart from some wear to and near the extreme corners, the board is in very good condition, flat and even. There are some scattered minor flecks of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the sky and along the upper half of the left and right edges. Apart from a few minor flecks of paint loss along the extreme edges, notably a spot to the left of the lower edge and to the upper left corner, this work is in very good condition, with rich colours and a strong surface.
