Condition

The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This large and impressive painting is in beautiful condition. The paint layer has been cleaned and varnished. There are no signs of abrasion or discoloration. The unusually large scale of the painting is impressive and the paint layer is beautifully preserved throughout. There seems to be no advantage to cleaning the picture further and there are no retouches or damages to the paint layer. The canvas has a painted reverse which stiffens up the linen support well. It seems more than likely that this is the original canvas which was reinforced with the painted back by Charles Robeson, the artist supplier, in order to allow the artist to work on such a great scale.
